Throw away those backward mags that associate starvation with success and Botox with beauty, because The Good Body is here to give new-and-improved advice to countless looks-obsessed ladies, asking them to love themselves  thin lips, flabby bellies, and all.

 The tour has been changing women s lives, says playwright Eve Ensler, who also penned the wildly successful The Vagina Monologues. Her latest work debuted on Broadway in October 2004, and is currently showing at the Wadsworth Theater through February 12. Peter Askin directs.

Ensler herself stars in this one-woman show, which addresses women s struggle to be  good rather than, well, great in a culture pushing the illusion of women s aesthetic perfection.  Whether it s dieting, or compulsive exercising, or insane surgery, [these actions] reflect on how you feel about yourself, she says.

Through a series of fictional stories with elements of truth, by women of different ethnicities and circumstances, The Good Body addresses the female body as a whole. Through humor and gravitas, the play  which includes Ensler s own tale of obsession with her  not-so-flat, post-40s belly  intends to motivate women to  stop fixing [their] bodies and start fixing the world. Indeed, Ensler argues that if women would cease focusing on their looks and the endless amounts of things that need bleaching, or tucking, or purging, they could start solving larger social and political concerns.

Although both The Vagina Monologues and The Good Body are collections of monologues by different female characters, Ensler says the new work  is a totally different thing than her previous one. And although the words  vagina and  anorexia may suggest a  women s play, she sees it as affecting for men as well.  It s directed toward human beings, she says, adding that many men have been attending and learning from the show.

The Good Body also affects women outside theater walls, as a percentage of tour proceeds will go toward V-Day, what Ensler calls a  global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Through V-Day campaigns, large- and small-scale productions of The Vagina Monologues alone have already raised more than $25 million for cause-related organizations.
